Het schrijversteam Marcus Dunstan en Patrick Melton werkt op dit moment aan de spelverfilming van het God of War spel. Tijdens een discussie over hun vorige film, The Collection, werd hen gevraagd naar het scenario van God of War.

Het duo werd aangesteld om het scenario van David Self te herschrijven. Ondanks dat ze niet over het verhaal mogen schrijven, konden ze wel vertellen dat de film het genre in een andere richting zal nemen en dus niet zal lijken op bijvoorbeeld Clash of the Titans of Immortals.

"Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction," vertelde Dunstan. "Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre and now say something different."

Melton voegde daaraan toe dat het verhaal ook flink kan verschillen van het oorspronkelijke verhaal. Dat mag van Sony. "Sony games, you think they'd be sacred about the origin story and all of that, but they were encouraging us to make it different from those movies and if that means going in dramatic shifts, they were cool of it. And they're involved."
