George Lucas heeft altijd gezegd dat de originele bioscoopversies van de eerste drie Star Wars films nooit op DVD zouden verschijnen, maar dat blijkt niet waar te zijn. Later dit jaar worden Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back en Return Of The Jedi allemaal in 2disc-uitvoeringen uitgebracht, en kun je de films dus aanschouwen zoals ze destijds in de bioscoop waren te zien. De DVD's zullen slechts een beperkte tijd te koop zijn, namelijk tussen 12 september en 31 december.

We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."
