Regisseur John Woo (Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, Paycheck) heeft de rechten bemachtigd van de populaire Metroid videospellen. Woo zal de daar uit voortkomende science-fiction film produceren en heeft een optie om deze ook te regisseren.

Het plan is om de film voor 2006 uit te brengen. Deze zal zich richten op de herkomst van bounty hunter Samus Aran en haar strijd tegen de Metroids en hun leider, Mother Brain.

Nintendo brengt in mei de achtste Metroid-videogame uit: Metroid Prime 2.
