Nadat Guillermo Del Toro eind mei 2010 vertrok als regisseur van The Hobbit leek het erop dat hij de regie op zich zou nemen van de film At the Mountains of Madness. Deze film lijkt er echter niet te komen, aangezien het project nog altijd geen groen licht heeft gekregen van de filmstudio Universal Pictures. Alles wijst erop dat dit voorlopig ook niet gaat gebeuren. Del Toro heeft zijn pijlen daarom gericht op Pacific Rim, welke in de zomer van 2013 moet verschijnen.

Del Toro in het bevestigende persbericht van maatschappij Legendary Pictures: "We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me."

De laatste film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, van Del Toro stamt alweer uit 2008. Dit betekent overigens niet dat meneer stilzit. Als producent is hij namelijk betrokken bij films als Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Ring 3D en Pinocchio.
