A Star is Born is een verhaal dat al meerdere keren verteld is, telkens in een andere tijdsperiode en met enkele kleine aanpassingen in het verhaal. Zo wordt er nu ook weer werk gemaakt van een nieuwe versie met Clint Eastwood aan het roer en Beyoncé in de hoofdrol. Laatstgenoemde speelt een zangeres die met behulp van een oudere muzikant een ster wordt. Voor de mannelijke rol wordt Tom Cruise genoemd.
De nieuwe versie wordt geschreven met het oog op de enorme ontwikkeling die de muziekindustrie de afgelopen tien jaar heeft ondergaan. Verder is de oudere muzikant geïnspireerd door één van de belangrijkste muzikale figuren van de jaren '90: Nirvana kopman Kurt Cobain.

I think Ive reinvented the Norman Maine character, the lead. I wanted to do A Star is Born because Im a huge Kurt Cobain fan. That was like my Kennedy assassination when I was a teenager. When he died it was a huge horrible thing. So I approached A Star is Born, for me the framework was all right, if Kurt Cobain never got to go Unplugged and survived and its 20 years later and its now, and he wanted to try to do that album with that understanding as this grunge icon. Thatd be tough to get done if he was past his prime, no longer selling, how does he get that album?
Het script is nog in ontwikkeling, maar Fetters weet wel al zeker dat hij het hier en daar zal spiegelen aan de huidige muziekindustrie.
The love story is there and its been done five times, but I was more interested in I feel like right now is an interesting time. My industrys changing and trying to deal with it. People arent going to the movies as much anymore. The music industrys changing. Its harder to be a successful artist and make money off it, especially if youre a dinosaur. If youre a guy in your 50s, in a world of Justin Bieber, if youre Kurt Cobain now in your 50s, what do you do? How do you exist in this world?
