We gaan richting november en dat betekent dat we steeds grotere releases krijgen, ook de grotere Oscartitels. Een daarvan is de muzikale Queen-biopic Bohemian Rhapsody van regisseur Bryan Singer (X-Men: Apocalypse) en afrondend regisseur Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle). 20th Century Fox heeft de film ondertussen gescreend, met eerste online reacties tot gevolg.
Het uitkijken is uiteraard naar Rami Malek, bekend van zijn rol in de tv-serie Mr. Robot. Is zijn invulling van Freddie Mercury, de legendarische leadzanger die in 1991 overleed, krachtig genoeg? En dan is er ook de rol van Mike Myers als EMI-chef Ray Foster, en uiteraard de muziek in de film.
Er zijn aanvullende rollen voor Gwilym Lee (Brian May), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon), Aidan Gillen (eerste manager John Reid), Tom Hollander (tweede manager Jim Beach) en Lucy Boynton (Mercury's levenspartner Mary Austin). just did a double feature of A STAR IS BORN and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY and yeeeeesh that contrast didn't do the latter any favors. Rami Malek sure nails that imitation, tho.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a straight-on biopic with plenty of Queen music and a strong performance by Rami Malek. It will get mixed reviews. It might play with audiences.

My biggest takeaway from BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is how much the rest of Queen resents Freddie Mercury. But Rami Malek is outstanding. Also, the fact Mike Myers is in this movie is genius and insane.

Rami Malik's phenomenal and game-changing performance as the legendary Freddie Mercury/Farrokh Bulsara cuts through what could have been a very formulaic and basic story of #Queen in #BohemianRhapsody. He owns the fuck out of that film and breathes life into Mercury.
