Kate Mara (House of Cards) is de vrouwelijke hoofdrol aangeboden in 20th Century Fox's The Martian. Als ze de rol aanneemt, zal ze te zien zijn naast Matt Damon in de nieuwe film van Ridley Scott.

Het is nog onbekend welke rol Mara precies zal spelen in de film. Volgend jaar is de jonge actrice te zien in superheldenfilm The Fantastic Four als Susan Storm, alias de Invisible Woman.

Simon Kinberg en Aditya Sood zullen The Martian produceren.
