Gisteren zijn de prijzen van de Writers Guild of America uitgereikt. Daarbij kwamen Argo en Zero Dark Thirty als winnaars naar voren. Mark Boals scenario voor Zero Dark Thirty ging er vandoor met de prijs voor het beste originele scenario en Chris Terrios adaptie van Argo won de prijs voor het beste aangepaste scenario.
Daarmee mag Ben Affleck onderhand wel ruimte gaan maken in zijn prijzenkastje voor de Oscars. De film won immers ook al op de DGA, SAG, BAFTAs en nog veel meer andere prijzengalas. Scenarist Terrio vertelde in zijn acceptatiespeech dat hij vijf jaar gewerkt had aan het scenario van Argo. Hij had geen geld meer en kon zijn studentenlening niet afbetalen, maar "I had my specs and Writers Guild card; I can't tell you how that propped me up," vertelde Terrio.
Zijn scenario versloeg dat van films als Perks of Being a Wallflower, Life of Pi, Lincoln en Silver Linings Playbook.
Een andere hoofdprijs was er voor Searching for Sugar Man, de documentaire over het rockicoon uit de jaren 70, Rodriguez, die ook won tijdens de BAFTAs.
In de categorie televisie won Breaking Bad de prijs voor de beste dramaserie en Louie won als beste comedy serie. Tot beste nieuwkomer werd HBOs Girls bestempeld.
De resultaten van de WGA-awards worden bepaald aan de hand van 12,000 stemmen die uitgebracht mogen worden door leden van de vakbond. Deze zijn de afgelopen achttien jaar een redelijk betrouwbare voorspellende factor voor de Oscars geweest. Dertien van de achttien keer wonnen films die bij de WGA wonnen, ook de Oscars voor de beste scenarios.
