Regisseur Bryan Singer ziet X-Men: Days of Future Past niet bepaald als een tussendoortje. Het is de meest ambitieuze X-Men film tot nu toe, mede door het feit dat de castleden uit zowel X-Men: First Class als uit de originele X-Men trilogie samen worden gebracht. Singer sprak met de mensen van Empire en probeerde hen uit te leggen hoe immens zijn film zal gaan worden.

"It's epic. I don't think people realize how big this movie's going to be. We get to bring both casts together. We've cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That's why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible."

Omdat er veel personages aanwezig zijn die niet in de originele comic voorkomen, vragen veel fans zich af hoe trouw Singers film zal zijn aan het bronmateriaal. Hoewel de film hier en daar zal afwijken, hoeven we ons totaal geen zorgen te maken.

"It has a lot of aspects of the comic. The actual comic of Days Of Future Past had a whole ton of stuff going on, so it’s like any of these things; you have to distill it. But I think the fans will be pleased that some of the most exciting parts of Days Of Future Past are going to be connected to this movie."

Hoewel X-Men: The Last Stand en X-Men Origins: Wolverine niet door iedereen even goed ontvangen werden, houdt Singer bij het maken van Days of Future Past ook rekening met de gebeurtenissen uit deze films.

"I’m taking into account every movie – I’m not just grabbing my first two movies and First Class and smashing them together. I’m taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up. But ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either."

Volgens Singer doen we er goed aan om twitter in de gaten te houden aangezien hij dit medium gebruikt om ons enigszins op de hoogte te houden.

"I’ll be using Twitter as an avenue. I think Twitter is an amazing thing. Very often something gets out there in the rumour-sphere, and people start building up an impression of something that might not be right. So what I want to do is just little by little drop out whatever information is official."

Het scenario van Simon Kinberg is gebaseerd op Chris Claremonts en John Byrne's verhaallijn uit Uncanny X-Men #141 en #142 (1981). Ditmaal komen de X-Men voor een grotere uitdaging dan ooit te staan. In een alternatieve toekomst wonen mutanten in concentratiekampen. Sentinels, gigantische robots, patrouilleren door de Verenigde Straten en jagen op de X-Men. In het heden moeten de X-Men de taak op zich nemen een sleutelgebeurtenis die leidt tot deze toekomst te voorkomen.

De cast bestaat tot nu toe uit Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore en Hugh Jackman. X-Men: Days of Future Past komt in Nederland uit op 17 juli 2014.
