Regisseur Paul Thomas Anderson, van wie binnenkort The Master verschijnt, sprak tijdens het Venice Film Festival, met Empire over zijn volgende filmproject Inherent Vice. De film wordt gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek Thomas Pynchon uit 2009.

Anderson beschrijft de verfilming als volgt: "like a Cheech and Chong movie. [Adapting Pychon's work is] just gonna be great and, hopefully, fun." Overigens is het nog niet helemaal duidelijk wanneer de film in productie genomen gaat worden: “Hopefully not long. I'd like to have a few years of being more productive. But we'll see.”

Mogelijk ligt de reden hiervoor wel bij het feit dat een boekverfilming niet altijd de meest makkelijke opgave is. Anderson: “There's so much. But it's fun too, be because they're his words, and... it's like taking your dad's car for a ride, y'know?” Heeft hij de regisseur dan wel ontmoet? Anderson reageert grappend: "If I told you I'd have to kill you. Because Thomas Pynchon... You know who he is? Terry Malick.”

Enige tijd geleden werd Robert Downey Jr. nog in verband gebracht met de film, die als volgt wordt omschreven: Vice is a comparatively accessible Pynchon work that tells the story of a stoner detective who gets wrapped up in a number of mysteries in 1969 L.A. while the Manson Family trial growls in the background.
