Guillermo del Toro gaat samen met Mark Gustafson, de animatie-regisseur bij The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), de film Pinocchio regisseren. Van de 3D stop-motion animatiefilm, gebaseerd op de houten hoofdpersoon uit een boek uit 1883 van de Italiaanse schrijver Carlo Collodi, zagen we begin 2011 al de eerste concept-art voorbijkomen.

Nadat Del Toro al optrad als uitvoerend producent bij de DreamWorks animatiefilms Puss In Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2 en het dit jaar te verschijnen Rise of the Guardians wordt dit de eerste keer dat hij een animatiefilm regisseert. Del Toro schreef ook het script van Pinocchio, dat een hervertelling wordt van het bekende sprookje.

The Jim Henson Company zal optreden als de producent. "Guillermo has been so passionate about this project from its inception and it is an honor to have him bring his unique blend of live action and animation experience to this well-loved story, collaborating with the talented Mark Gustafson," aldus Lisa Henson, CEO van The Jim Henson Company.

Uiteraard is het personage Pinokkio voornamelijk bekend uit de Walt Disney animatiefilm Pinocchio uit 1940.
