Na het doorslaande succes van het vierde deel Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, die bij een budget van $60 miljoen een kleine $300 miljoen ophaalde aan de wereldwijde bioscoopkassa, kon een vervolg niet uitblijven. Ondertussen zijn de opnames voor het vijfde deel in de franchise al grotendeels achter de rug en wordt het tijd dat de marketingmachine gaat draaien om de 3D horrorfilm te promoten.

Screen Gems heeft daarom een uitgebreide synopsis vrijgegeven en is zo vrij geweest om de titel aan te passen van Resident Evil: Retribution naar het uiterst creatieve Re5ident Evil: Retribution. Enige verschil is - inderdaad - de "5". Hieronder de synopsis van de film van regisseur Paul W.S. Anderson:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead.
