Het was al een tijdje bekend dat er een film aan zit te komen van het beroemde bordspel Monopoly. Ook was bekend dat de film in handen is van niemand minder dan Ridley Scott. Er is ondertussen weer wat informatie binnengedruppeld. Frank Beddor, de man achter het concept van de film, legt hieronder het één en ander uit:

He’s in this very vibrant place, Monopoly City, and he’s just come out of a Chance Shop. As it goes on, he takes on the evil Parker Brothers in the game of Monolopy. He has to defeat them. It tries to incorporate all the iconic imageries - a sports car pulls up, there’s someone on a horse, someone pushing a wheelbarrow - and rich Uncle Pennybags, you’re going to see him as the maître d’ at the restaurant and he’s the buggy driver and the local eccentric and the doorman at the opera. There’s all these sight gags.

De persoon waar het over gaat is een “comedic, lovable loser”, die niet al te best is in zijn baan in onroerend goed. Hij is daarentegen wel behoorlijk goed in het spel Monopoly. Zijn ambitie is om het wereldrecord 'monopoly spelen' te breken, wat neerkomt op 70 dagen achter elkaar. Dit leidt er toe dat hij terecht komt in de beschreven Monopoly-gebaseerde wereld.
