Het was alweer de 75ste editie van de jaarlijkse Golden Globe Awards, waarin een totaal van 25 globes werden uitgedeeld: 14 voor film en 11 voor televisie. Toch was het wel duidelijk dat een paar films en series het beter deden dan de rest en meerdere malen wonnen in diverse categorieën. De grootste winnaar was zonder twijfel Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: de film van Martin McDonagh won maar liefst 5 Golden Globes. Zo won Three Billboards de Golden Globe voor beste film in de categorie drama, terwijl die voor beste film in de categorie musical/comedy naar Lady Bird ging.

In de categorie beste acteurs vielen James Franco en Gary Oldman in de prijzen; zo won James Franco de award voor beste acteur in een musical/comedy voor zijn rol als Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist. In de film is hij te zien samen met zijn broer Dave Franco, die met hem op de rode loper verscheen en ook het podium mee opkwam toen James de Golden Globe in ontvangst mocht nemen. Gary Oldman won de Golden Globe voor beste acteur in de categorie drama voor zijn vertolking van Winston Churchill in de film Darkest Hour.

De prijzen voor beste actrices gingen naar Frances McDormand en Saoirse Ronan. McDormand won de Golden Globe voor beste actrice in een drama, een van de vijf Golden Globes voor Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Zij gaf een krachtige speech over de politieke situatie in de Verenigde Staten en ook had ze het over het seksueel misbruik in Hollywood. Ronan won haar award voor beste actrice in een musical/comedy. Zij nam tijdens haar speech meer tijd om haar familie te bedanken, voornamelijk haar moeder, die de ceremonie niet bij kon wonen.

De grote serie-winnaar was zonder twijfel Big Little Lies; zo wonnen Alexander Skarsgard en Nicole Kidman allebei een Golden Globe voor hun hoofdrollen in de serie, terwijl Laura Dern ook een award in ontvangst mocht nemen voor beste bijrol. Ook won de serie de Globe voor beste Limited Series. Eigenlijk zou Big Little Lies een mini-serie zijn, maar vanwege het grote succes kondigde HBO een paar weken terug aan dat er toch nog (op z'n minst) een tweede seizoen komt.
