Ray Stevenson is een van de weinige acteurs die kan zeggen dat hij twee personages uit het Marvel-universum hebben gespeeld. Hij speelde zowel de Punisher in Punisher: War Zone als het personage Volstagg in Thor. Stevenson sprak in een interview over zijn tweede optreden als Volstagg in Thor: The Dark World en hoe het vervolg verschilt van het eerste deel:
"In the first Thor Asgard had this tremendous peace among the 9 realms. They were riding at the heights. Everything is working and looking as it should be. In this one, the realms are being whipped up into various rebellions. There is a darker malignant force out there and we are in the process of engaging in long protracted skirmishes and battles. The luster and shine of the city has been taken off and it all leads to a huge assault, an attack at the heart of Asgard. It could be completely wiped out, the stakes are a lot higher."
Stevenson voegde daaraan toe dat we Volstagg deze keer ook meer zien vechten dan in de eerste film.
"Hes great on a battlefield. He is one of the warriors three and doing what they do, their time is spent fighting on many different fronts. Theyre not always fighting together. Volstagg is struggling, he has a brood, they are fighting for hearth and home as much as for the idea of Asgard itself. Thats where he has trouble. Hes all too aware of how potentially threatening this new enemy is on both the home front and the battlefield."
Het vervolg, dat vanaf 30 oktober in de bioscopen draait, speelt af na de gebeurtenissen van Thor en The Avengers. Thor probeert de vrede in cosmos te herstellen wanneer hij plots wordt geteisterd door een oud ras, onder leiding van de boosaardige Malekith, dat het universum opnieuw wil hullen in duisternis.
Naast Chris Hemsworth als Thor spelen ook Jaimie Alexander, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman en Idris Elba mee in het tweede solo-avontuur van de Dondergod.
