Robert Downey Jr. sprak met Entertainment Weekly en ging in op Iron Man 3 en hetgeen we kunnen verwachten van de sequel. De acteur speelde de superheld al drie keer, in Iron Man, Iron Man 2 en The Avengers. EW stelde Downey Jr. de vraag of er sprake is van een andere aanpak bij de actiescènes nu regisseur Shane Black de touwtjes in handen heeft. Zijn antwoord:
Weve just been talking about one sequence the top-secret name is the Boot/Glove Sequence, I can tell you that, just between you and me its where Tony only has one gauntlet and one boot and he has to escape multiple captors. Its really fun, dude. Were taking everything from his first gauntlet test in the first movie up through the most extreme stuff we thought up for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers and pulling on all of it and making this one big, extended challenge of physics.

Since I was just talking about Flight and Don is on my mind, Ill start with him. Rhodey is much more in the dead center of things. Hes much more dynamic. Weve made this decision that while Tony is a technical guy, hes not really a trained guy. Theres a lot of fun to be had with Don because hes really good with hardware and hes a martial artist, so its been really fun exploiting this possibility of Tony having moments like the one in Avengers, like the one with Cap where he decides, Oh screw it, he probably knows what hes doing. So theres a lot of that and a lot more fun and a lot more depth to Rhodey this time around.
Ook regisseur Black kwam ging onlangs in op zijn film, die overigens als het startsein moet dienen voor Marvels zogeheten 'phase 2'. Over de keuze voor Rebecca Hall als Maya Hansen zei hij het volgende:
Its one thing we loved about the comic book, which was that its someone Tony meets in one capacity at one point in his life, and he proves to be touched by that encounter. We needed a snappy and exciting actor to play the part, and not make it this female scientist who takes off her glasses and suddenly shes beautiful! Theres a certain element about her being the female Robert Downey Jr in a way.
