Peter Jacksons eerste deel van zijn The Hobbit trilogie, An Unexpected Journey, is inmiddels af en de eerste reacties beginnen binnen te stromen. Opvallend is dat de film op IMDb nu al op een 9.2 staat met meer dan 7000 stemmen. Dit is even hoog als The Shawshank Redemption en The Godfather, de twee hoogst geplaatste films in de alom bekende top 250. De laatste twee films die dusdanig stuntten in de lijst waren The Dark Knight (2008) en Inception (2010), twee films van regisseur Christopher Nolan die vandaag de dag nog steeds in de top twintig bivakkeren.

Na 22 recensies staat de RT score momenteel op een bescheiden (maar verse) 77%. De mensen bij Variety en Total Film zijn over de film te spreken, maar The Hollywood Reporter moet er juist niets van hebben.

Variety: Fulfilling just a fraction of J.R.R. Tolkien's "There and Back Again" subtitle, The Hobbit alternately rewards and abuses auds' appetite for all things Middle-earth.

Total Film: Peter Jackson's return to swords, sorcery and beards deserving of their own postcodes is fantasy how it ought to be.

The Hollywood Reporter: There are elements in this new film that are as spectacular as much of the Rings trilogy was, but there is much that is flat-footed and tedious as well, especially in the early going.
