Nu The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey er rap aankomt (minder dan een maand wachten nog!), is de epische ballade die tijdens de aftiteling speelt, online gezet. Er waren hoge verwachtingen van het nummer. Die kwamen vooral voort uit eerdere nummers die te horen waren in de Lord of the Rings-filmserie. Zo hoorden we Enya met May It Be, Gollum’s Song en zong Annie Lennox Into the West. De eerste daarvan werd genomineerd voor een Oscar en Lennox won er daadwerkelijk eentje met haar nummer.

Vandaar dus dat de druk op de schouders van Neil Finn groot was. De Rolling Stone vroeg hem hoe hij tot het nummer kwam. "The Song Of The Lonely Mountain was developed from a dark and mysterious theme which the dwarves sing early in the movie," vertelt hij. "After some days of mining underground (actually, in Peter’s office) I emerged with the song, then set about recording it with my sons Elroy and Liam. Dave Fridmann came in at the end with a bold mix. He seemed to respond well to my demands for 'more anvil!' Pop music needs more anvil!”
