Voor Kate Beckinsale voelt haar terugkeer naar de Underworld franchise alsof ze bij familie op bezoek gaat. Tijdens Comic-Con zei de actrice dat haar moeder een rol zal hebben in het vierde deel, Underworld: Awakening, nadat haar dochtertje Lily al te zien was in Underworld: Evolution. Toch was Beckinsale in eerste instantie niet van plan om mee te werken aan deel 4.

"When people asked if I was going to do another one, I had said no. Because the plan was always to do a trilogy with a planned prequel, which I knew I wasn't going to be in. So I really didn’t think I was going to be in another one."

Daarnaast had ze in eerste instantie weinig fiducie in een vierde deel.

"I was a bit nervous about number four. When I was growing up, anything with the number four was straight-to-video. I think that is what most people feel. But I think there a number of films now that actually work. If we were going to do it again we didn’t want to carry on straight from the second one. I guess once all the ideas started coming in and the concept was so different. What would happen if the Underworld was not quite under anymore? It seemed like an interesting thing to do. And it was in 3-D which I have never done before."

Het verhaal van Underworld: Awakening zal zich afspelen na de gebeurtenissen uit de tweede film, Underworld: Evolution. De derde film, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, was immers een prequel.

De film, onder regie van de Zweden Måns Mårlind en Björn Stein, komt op 15 maart 2012 in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
