Nicholas Hoult, momenteel te bewonderen als Hank McCoy aka The Beast in X-Men First Class, zit momenteel alweer in Londen voor zijn volgende film. Hij is de ster in Bryan Singers Jack the Giant Killer, een 3D fantasiefilm dat losjes wordt gebaseerd op het sprookje Jack and the Beanstalk. De laatste film van Singer, die overigens de eerste twee X-Men films regisseerde en in het geval van First Class optrad als producent, dateert van 2008. Toen maakte hij namelijk Valkyrie.

Tegenover de LA Times sprak Singer over hoe Jack the Giant Killer totaal verschilt van zijn laatste film.

I think this is the antidote to Valkyrie. With that movie, I was so obsessed with the accuracy and the history and the detail, and this film is a fantastical time in England. It’s not pegged to a particular time in history, and it deals with fun and broad characters.

Singer heeft aangegeven dat de film op een unieke wijze geschoten wordt. Verder is het zijn allereerste 3D project. Ook op het gebied van de romantiek begeeft de regisseur zich op nieuw terrein.

It’s the first time in one of my films that there’s a romance that’s not fraught with a love triangle. The simpleness of this romance is my cure for all the love triangles that permeated the X-Men.

Het script voor Jack the Giant Killer komt van Christopher McQuarrie, waarmee Singer al vaak samenwerkte. De film gaat over een jonge held die een prinses redt. Hoewel dit vrij simpel klinkt, beweert Singer het tegendeel.

I think this takes it a step further — it’s all about the nature of storytelling. The tale is told by certain characters, and then it gets retold. It shows you can’t separate the story from the way it’s told.
