Ondanks het baanbrekende succes van James Cameron met Avatar, bestaat er vaak nog veel verdeeldheid onder filmliefhebbers als het gaat over motion capture en 3D. Sommigen zien motion capture als de volgende stap in de acteerevolutie waarbij de acteur op den duur uit beeld zal gaan verdwijnen, terwijl anderen het zien als een oncomfortabele kruising tussen animatie en live-action. Verder wordt 3D door velen beschouwd als niet meer dan een gimmick die op den duur waarschijnlijk weer uit de bioscopen zal verdwijnen. Sommigen zien het zelfs als een goedkope toevoeging die enkel als excuus dient om de klant weer een paar euro extra afhandig te maken.

In oktober gaat ook Steven Spielberg overstag en kunnen we gaan genieten van van zijn Kuifje verfilming The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, een film die bomvol zit met motion capture en ook nog eens in 3D te bekijken is. We zagen al enkele plaatjes, maar verder is er tot nu toe nog weinig bekend over de film. Spielberg heeft nu echter een interview gedaan met de Los Angeles Times waarin hij onder andere ingaat op zijn keuze voor motion capture voor de film:

It was based on my respect for the art of Hergé and wanting to get as close to that art as I could. Hergé wrote about fictional people in a real world, not in a fantasy universe. It was the real universe he was working with, and he used National Geographic to research his adventure stories. It just seemed that live action would be too stylized for an audience to relate to. You’d have to have costumes that are a little outrageous when you see actors wearing them. The costumes seem to fit better when the medium chosen is a digital one.

Spielberg werd gelijk verliefd op de technologie:

I just adored it. It made me more like a painter than ever before. I got a chance to do so many jobs that I don’t often do as a director. You get to paint with this device that puts you into a virtual world, and allows you to make your shots and block all the actors with a small hand-held device only three times as large as an Xbox game controller.

Spielberg was ook onder de indruk van het feit dat hij enerzijds acteurs door de motion capture ruimte kan zien lopen, en tegelijkertijd op het scherm de personages het zelfde ziet doen, maar dan binnen de door hen gecreëerde wereld:

When Captain Haddock runs across the volume, the cameras capture all the information of his physical and emotional moves. So as Andy Serkis runs across the stage, there’s Captain Haddock on the monitor, in full anime, running along the streets of Belgium. Not only are the actors represented in real time, they enter into a three-dimensional world.

Acteur Nick Frost, die samen met Simon Pegg de rollen zal gaan spelen van Jansen en Janssen, ging ook nog even in op Spielbergs enthousiastme voor de nieuwe technologie:
