Vandaag zijn in Hollywood de nominaties voor de 83e Academy Awards bekendgemaakt. The King's Speech was de grote winnaar met maar liefst twaalf nominaties (ter vergelijking: The Hurt Locker kreeg afgelopen jaar negen nominaties). Op de tweede plaats eindigde True Grit van de gebroeders Joel & Ethan Coen met 10 nominaties. Een gedeelde derde plaats was er voor The Social Network en Inception, die beiden 8 nominaties kregen.
De grootste verrassing tijdens de nominaties was dat regisseur Christopher Nolan niet werd genomineerd als beste regisseur voor Inception, wat wel algemeen werd verwacht. De film dingt wel mee voor beste film, maar in de categorie beste regisseur moest Nolan David Fincher (The Social Network), Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), David O. Russell (The Fighter), Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) en Joel & Ethan Coen (True Grit) voor zich dulden. Deze vijf films dingen ook mee voor beste film, net als Inception, The Kids are all Right, Toy Story 3, 127 Hours en Winters Bone.
Ook de nominatie van Javier Bardem als beste acteur voor zijn rol in Biutiful kwam als een verrassing. Hoewel er een flinke campagne werd gevoerd om de prestatie van Bardem te laten opvallen, ontbrak zijn naam in de meeste prijzenshows tot nu toe. Bardem neemt het in de categorie beste acteur op tegen Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), James Franco (127 Hours), Colin Firth (The King's Speech) en Jeff Bridges (True Grit).
Als beste actrice werden Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winters Bone) en Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) genomineerd.
