In 1996 kwam de film Trainspotting uit, die dé doorbraak vormde voor regisseur Danny Boyle. Zijn nieuwste film, 127 Hours, draait al een tijdje in de Amerikaanse bioscopen, Boyle mikt daarmee op de Oscars, waar hij met Slumdog Millionaire maar liefst acht van de beeldjes binnen sleepte.

Na 127 Hours heeft de regisseur een gat in zijn agenda, dat waarschijnlijk gevuld gaat worden met een vervolg op Trainspotting. "It will happen, I think. I mean, we'll approach them all again about it, but it will depend on what place they're all at. We have a very strong idea that it would be a wonderful thing to reapproach, to do again, when they have aged clearly into a mid-life kind of crisis, basically. They're not quite there yet, I don't think."

Er is al een vervolg verschenen op het boek waarop de film werd gebaseerd, Porno getiteld, maar schijnbaar is het boek een stuk minder goed. Ewan McGregor, hoofdrolspeler in Trainspotting, vond het boek namelijk ”not as good as Trainspotting.

"He's right of course that the book,” aldus Boyle, ”'Porno,' is not a great book in the way that 'Trainspotting,' the original novel, is genuinely a masterpiece, I think, as a piece of writing. But we have been doing some work on it, and it's got potential, yeah, for sure. And when the moment's right, I think we will approach it."

Dus eigenlijk is het gewoon wachten tot McGregor oud genoeg is om in zijn midlife-crisis te belanden.
