Al jaren probeert Terry Gilliam (The Brothers Grimm, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) een film te maken over Don Quichote.

Bij zijn eerste poging tot het maken van de film wist hij acteurs als Johnny Depp en Sally Philips aan zich te binden, maar het liep uiteindelijk allemaal op niets uit. Het mislukken van die poging werd uitgebreid vastgelegd in de documentaire Lost in La Mancha. Echter Gilliam liet in een interview weten dat hij nog steeds bezig is om het project alsnog van de grond te krijgen.

Paste: Between such tentative projects as GOOD OMENS, THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE and the Gorillaz feature, what do you have on the horizon that you can talk about?
Gilliam: There’s a couple others as well, but QUIXOTE is what we’re working on at the moment. Hopefully that’ll get up and running next year.

Paste: Is it still going to have Johnny Depp in it?
Gilliam: Yeah, and I rewrote the script. Robert Duvall has agreed to play Quixote. I’m really excited. So it’s all that business of funding now.

Het verhaal is losjes gebaseerd op een boek geschreven door de Spaanse Miguel de Cervantes dat gaat over een excentrieke Spanjaard, genaamd Don Quichote.
De film moet gaan over een reclameman die terug in de tijd belandt en kennismaakt met de excentrieke Quichote, en vervolgens eindigt als zijn hulpje Sancho Panza.
