Steven Spielberg zit als sinds 2010 vast aan Robopocalypse en het zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid zijn volgende film worden na Lincoln. De regisseur sprak met Time Out en gaf enkele details om ons een idee te geven van wat we van de film kunnen verwachten. Spielberg zei het volgende:
"Its a movie about a global war between man and machine. [I]ts a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would. 'Robopocalypse' takes place in 15 or 20 years, so itll be another future we can relate to. Its about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. Its not the newest theme, its been done throughout science fiction, but its a theme that becomes more relevant every year."
De film wordt gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Daniel H. Wilson. Het scenario komt van Drew Goddard en de productie moet dit jaar van start gaan. De release vindt vervolgens ergens in 2013 plaats.
