Tijdens Comic-Con sprak /Film met voormalig producer en huidig Disney President of Production Sean Bailey over David Finchers aankomende versie van 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Bailey zei er het volgende over:

I’m really excited. One of the great benefits of this job is I get to meet with filmmakers who I tremendously admire. So to be able to sit down with David and have David say, “Look, I’ve never really thought about Disney before, but I really want to try to do my Empire Strikes Back. And I think 20,000 Leagues is the title.” It’s a thrilling conversation to be in. So we had a lot of conversations about what we viewed as Disney, and what David obviously so brilliantly pushes for in his movies. And the fact that we were able to kind of align those two goals is…I have been really excited about it. … It’s a bold, you know, Fincher-esque take. It’s a bold, aggressive…It’s got some of the characters from the original. It’s got Land, it’s got Aronnax. It’s got Nemo, of course. But it’s kind of a bold way in.

Tegenover MTV omschreef Fincher de film als “a gigantic steampunk science fiction movie from 1873.”

Het project werd voorheen aangeduid met Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, en zou worden geregisseerd door McG met een scenario van Bill Marsilli en een herschrijving van Justin Marks en Randall Wallace. Het project werd stopgezet toen Disney voorzitter Dick Cook wegging bij Disney. De donkere toon van McG’s versie viel namelijk niet goed bij het nieuwe hoofd Rich Ross en productieleider Bailey.

Fincher nam McG's plaats over en ging aan het werk met een script van Scott Z. Burns, dat visueel duizelingwekkend zal moeten gaan worden. Het zal in de lijn moeten gaan liggen van Star Wars of The Empire Strikes Back.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) was de eerste live action film in de geschiedenis van Walt Disney, en wordt door velen beschouwd als de meest volwassen film die ooit door de studio is geproduceerd. De film uit 1954 is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige verhaal van Jules Verne. Het won twee Academy Awards in 1955 voor Beste Effects en Set Decoration, en werd tevens genomineerd voor Beste Film Editing.

David Finchers' 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea staat gepland voor 2012.
